What’s the Best That Could Happen?

What’s the Best That Could Happen?

By Heather Wuelpern | Editor of Chamber Edge, host of “The Business of…,” and Director of Communications at Tucson Metro Chamber

I vividly remember sitting across from a friend at Bobo’s while enjoying a chicken liver omelet with fried onions, sour cream, and spinach. She mentioned that Tucson Metro Chamber was hiring a director of communications. Little did I know that I would be sitting here today, a little more than four years later, writing my fifth Letter from the Editor for the Chamber Edge magazine, hosting the No. 1 Sunday morning radio show in Tucson, and in charge of the communications for a 126-year-old organization.

Leaving the comfort and security of my previous job of seven years was a risk, but I felt in my gut that I should take the opportunity. And whether it be a job change, going on a solo adventure, or starting a side hustle, I have never shied away from taking leaps of faith in life.

That is the case with many companies that are household names now. For example, car and ride-sharing seem natural now, but back in 2000, Zipcar was just an idea that co-founders Robin Chase and Antje Danielson dreamed up while dropping their kids off at the same kindergarten. With just $68 in their bank accounts, they turned the idea into a tangible business, which they eventually sold to Avis in 2013 for $500 million.

You will discover other stories of those who took a chance within the pages of this magazine. For example, having a brother with autism was the catalyst for the owner of Tucson Acupuncture and Wellness (page 22) to follow a new career path. Higher Ground (page 30) started by volunteering to help high school students because of a need they saw and since then has positively impacted thousands of students. And Bayer, a global leader in health, took a chance when it entered agriculture to help us all enjoy a more sustainable future (page 42).

Let these stories inspire you to have the courage to take your own leap of faith. You, too, might be pleasantly surprised by what rewards you gain when you stay open to opportunities and take a chance.
