Building From the Past: Sundt Construction

BUILDING FROM THE PAST
By Ian W. McDowell | Vice President and Regional Director, Tucson at Sundt Construction

Sundt Construction began our Tucson operation in 1929. In 1929 the Arizona Inn was nearing completion. Phone numbers were four digits. The population in the town was around 30,000 people. As a comparison, the undergraduate enrollment at the University of Arizona is currently just over 35,000 students.

Tucson has come a long way in the past 93 years.

Sundt’s journey mirrors Tucson’s journey. At this point in our history, Sundt has been fortunate to build more than 50 buildings downtown and 68 buildings on the University Arizona campus. While our headquarters are still in Tucson, we now have 11 offices around the country and expect to execute nearly $1.8 billion in construction projects across the U.S. The modern version of Sundt was born in Tucson, and we are now fortunate to be a national company with an international reach.

Throughout that journey, we have remained steadfast members of the Chamber of Commerce. In Sundt’s early days, we were very much a small business and relied on the Chamber to connect us to critical services such as accounting and banking. As a mid-sized business, we were able to develop and grow through training programs provided by the Chamber, especially around leadership in the community. Today, even as a large business, we receive help from educational programming and through the advocacy the Chamber provides.

Businesses in Southern Arizona are at various stages of their development. Firms are defining their legacy every single day. Just as Sundt has benefited from our involvement with the Chamber, I know many businesses are doing the same, which is why Sundt continues to support and be involved in the Chamber. I take pride in what the Chamber has done and will continue to do for the Tucson business community and encourage you to allow the Chamber to help build a legacy for your business.
